Hey it’s Steve Fisher and today I want to talk to you about one of the most important topics when it comes to building a business that deals with people…
Alright, welcome back. So did you figured it out? This key component to success in business and in life is respect. So you may be asking, what does this have to do with building my business or building my team? Everything. In today’s world, it seems to be lacking and by that I mean it seems that many don’t even know how to give it and if you don’t know how to give it, you’re certainly not going to be able to get it.
Respect in business and in team building is a requirement. But just like many other things in life, you have to give it to get it. Here’s some tips for giving and gaining respect that I have learned over the many years I’ve been in business:
1. The number one way to give and gain respect is to be a good listener. How do you become a good listener? Make eye contact and be present in the conversation. This shows that you really care and also enables you to give proper responses.
2. Don’t just do what you say you’re going to do… Do more than you say you’re going to do! If you really want to show someone that you value them, go above and beyond, go the extra mile and become known for doing that. When you overwhelm people with value by over-delivering, you not only show respect, but you gain their respect as well and they begin referring others to you.
3. Be on time. When you set an appointment, show up early so you can be properly prepared for the meeting and you don’t come running in half-cocked and frazzled. Being on time shows you respect and value other people’s time. Be known for not wasting people’s time.
4. Choose your words wisely. Pay attention to how you are talking to people. Are you building them up or tearing them down? Do they feel better about themselves when they are around you or worse? Focus on giving respect with your words. Focus on gaining respect by working on your communication skills, your public speaking skills, and your command of and proper use of the English language. Jim Rohn said, “Take advantage of every opportunity to practice your communication skills so that when important occasions arise, you will have the gift, the style, the sharpness, the clarity, and the emotions to affect other people.”
5. Lastly, one of the best ways to gain respect is to build a successful business and at the same time remain humble. There are not too many things that are more of a turn-off than an arrogant person who treats people with disrespect because he/she thinks they are so much better than everyone else. On the other hand, humility combined with success is attractive and shows a respect and belief in others.
So let’s go out and make it happen! Let’s build our businesses, remain humble, share our knowledge, choose our words wisely, be on time, do more than we say we’re going to do, and let’s practice being good listeners! Choosing to operate this way guarantees that we are showing respect and gaining respect, which plays a huge role in our overall success.
